Lunch at Manly Beach with the Whelans

anly might be only on the other side of the harbour. but a complete lifestyle away from the Eastern Suburbs and other parts of Sydney. Families with kids in strollers, suntanned teenagers at the beach during school holidays, backpackers and other interstate and overseas tourists sitting at busy outdoor cafes in the sunshine. And sky-high Norfolk Pines line the surfing beach crammed with swimmers and sun worshippers. All part of the kaleidoscope of a vibrant community.

Des hosted me for lunch at ‘China Beach’ Restaurant right on the Manly Esplanade along with June and his daughters, Siobhan and Sarah. Thank you, all!

‘Uncle Mike’ has been a friend of the Whelan family for 45 years come next month; AND Des and June have been married 55 years come next week – a veritable ‘life sentence’. Congratulations!
