How unexpected to arrive at Yangon International Airport and find a sparkling new Terminal with efficient and fast Immigration, quick baggage delivery, and smiling Immigration personnel in crisply starched whites to wave you through the Green Channel! Tall palms stand sentinel outside and a feeling of exotica and the unknown excites.
The road to the city reminded me a little of Delhi, but with a fraction of the traffic and none of the masses. Our hotel in the diplomatic enclave of Yangon is the Governor’s Residence set in beautiful tropical gardens. We are welcomed with chilled papaya juice and ushered to our rooms. We rise at 6 to walk in the coller morning air to see the sun rise over the Shwedagon Pagoda, glistening in gold.
