Poor Mexicans bent picking strawberries as far as the eyes can see may not be poor in another sense – shiny pick-up trucks and late-model sedans fill parking lots and line the edge of the green expanses.
On Monday, it was artichokes in Castroville. Today, we have a ‘vegetable bowl’ – strawberries, cabbages, lettuce, and peas, and the further south we drive there’s vineyards for miles.
Paul is reminded of the words of the American song: ” . . . For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!”
We live these words of ‘America the Beautiful’ as we drive the length of the ‘fruited’ valley – with purple mountain majesty on each side.
