Recently reading an article on ‘The Golden Ring’ of towns within driving distance of Moscow, and having a strong desire to go explore them, has prompted me to dig deep into my archives and find the story of my first trip there in 1990.
I hope you enjoy reading what I experienced there 21 years ago.
Moscow USSR 1990 . . .
On the edge of historic change . . .
between reform and disintegration, perestroika and collapse . . .
I really loved reading this, Mick.
Now you have found the forum for all your old stories – the BLOG!

Dear Michael,
Thanks for sharing the “Moscow 1990” story with me. It brings back fond memories of the times when we were all young.
You’ll be surprised when you are back in Moscow after more than 20 years. I will be glad to take you to the new version of the Central Market that Jim showed you on the first morning of your visit. You’ll be shocked and Harrod’s would be jealous, if they knew. In the last 20 years, Moscow has changed enormously … on the surface. What you read in the newspapers and see on television nowadays are ample proof that not much has changed IN FACT.
Please keep me informed if there is anything I can do to make your stay enjoyable.
I now understand why you are planning to come end of September: to go to Uzbekistan in summer would be too hot, indeed.
Best regards, Dirk
