RANGOON REVISITED AFTER FOUR YEARS
Silver Wind is docked literally across the Strand from the downtown area of Rangoon, but the thought of walking back to the ship after today’s sightseeing and lunch was not to be considered.
The temperature had already climbed was above 100 degrees, and one or al of us might have expired in the heat simply waiting to cross the road. It’s fortunate that I asked for the change from lunch in local currency the pay the princely equivalent of $2 for the taxi fare. That we were let off at the fence and still had to walk the length of the docks was secondary.
From an architectural standpoint, continuing dilapidation appears to be winning out over development of the wonderful old colonial buildings that line the streets of the downtown area of Rangoon. Perhaps the sidewalks are not as ‘broken’ as they were, and the parks are definitely tended better providing a green lung and beauty to the city of six million people..
