After lunch we sail around Mt Stromboli, a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily, 926 metres above sea level. It contains one of the three active volcanoes in Italy that’s conveniently ‘smoking’ for us.

his morning, turning north, we head up through the straits of Messina towards Civitivecchia and Monte Carlo. Calabria in the toe of Italy lies to the east, and the island of Sicily to the west; dolphins play alongside the ship in our wash.
