Alan hosted family and close friends in a celebration for his 70th Birthday.
Earlier in the afternoon of the big day, storm clouds gathered; the sky grew grey and steely; thunder clapped and lightning struck; and rain bucketed down. Providentially, by late afternoon the skies cleared and the sea calmed in time for us to board the Macleay Cruiser at Double Bay for a sail on the beautiful Sydney Harbour, and a glass of Taittinger, on our way to a mystery designation for the Birthday Dinner.
Docking at the wharf at Balmoral Beach, on what had developed into a beautiful balmy evening, the group walked casually along the waterfront to the wonderful Bather’s Pavilion for an evening of good food, and great entertainment – by none other than the host himself!
“I love the video, but can’t you do something about the red face”, says Alan. “I wasn’t as red as that you know!”

Mick! I can’t wait to get home and play it again – but can’t you do something about my red face? It wasn’t as red as that you know!
Many thanks. I love it.

It looks like you all had a hoot – and what a treat to see so many faces from the past that I could still recognise – 29 years after I spent a very memorable year in Sydney – Alan you barely look any different to how you looked then (yes you always did look 70!) – I am so pleased you had such a fabulous fun packed night – the video is hilarious and lovely – well done Michael – I hope to catch up with you one day soon – in the meantime many congratulations on a landmark birthday (I also had a biggie this year as I turned 50!) lots of love and many fond memories Bushy xxxx
I missed all…It is so nice to see you all having a great time!!! Fabulous music

We were left speechless by your 70th celebrations on Sunday in Sydney – literally!!
We have both lost our voices, hence no contact with you by phone or Skype.
And this is four days later.
There’s no doubt that we really have been to a marvellous party.
Everyone was there, and frightfully gay.
We couldn’t have liked it more.
The planning, production, direction and performance of the event that stopped a thunderstorm were without peer.
Although at one stage we thought we might have been without a pier.
But trusty George got us to the perch on time.
AlPal, it was great to be a part of your celebrations with your siblings and your special friends.
We know that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.
The photos from Cecil B. De Musgrave (and associates) are clear evidence of that.
Once again, thanks for including us in that special group.
