Montevideo, Uruguay from Michael Mus on Vimeo.
A once prosperous and enterprising country has fallen into abandonment. What a shame! Uruguay was once dignified and known as the Switzerland of South America. Money was made through wool and leather.
Today it seems to be stuck in a time warp. The buildings around Independence Square in the centre of town are half empty and in need of basic maintenance. I twisted my ankle three times in the uneven sidewalks. We took a drive to the north of the city, to an area of parks and gardens, and ‘summer cottages’ of the wealthy. Once beautiful streets now feature many of these grand old homes in total neglect.
The taxi driver commented that the liberal government cannot agree on anything and strikes cripple the place. So many people come from other places and make it near impossible for society to work as a whole . . . there is no society! And what hope is there for improvement?
Democracy is not working. The governing liberal parties ‘hit the rich’, and the people who can make a difference to the improvement of the country withdraw their money and their businesses. Could Obama’s liberal policies do this to the US?
